Your local holistic store since 1969 with over 50 Years of Service in the Virginia Beach Area!
The Heritage Store was originally opened in February 1969 by Tom Johnson (1942-2015), to provide the hard-to-find formula ingredients mentioned in Edgar Cayce’s readings. It started as a small, one-owner business and was described in the New York A.R.E. News as “the world’s smallest store.”
In order to expand and increase sales, health foods were added to our merchandise. This proved to be a good decision and after a few months, we were able to hire our first employee, Carol Barraff.
As the demand for quality products increased, especially those not readily found in most stores, we added dietary supplements, health food and mail order service. In 1971 we included non-Cayce items and books to our mail order catalog.
In 1974 the store moved to a larger location on Laskin Road, close to the Oceanfront of Virginia Beach. We expanded our services to include a café, bookstore and Holistic Center. Individualized customer service was our motto. The store boomed!
Our food store offered bulk foods, organic produce, refrigerated items, natural remedies and all your favorite dietary supplements. The bookstore had a spacious reading area and offered a fascinating selection of books, videos, cassettes, CD’s, cards, jewelry, meditation aids and metaphysical gifts.
The Rainforest Café specialized in natural, organic ingredients, fresh vegetable juices, salads, whole grain dishes, hearty soups and sandwiches, gourmet entrees, fresh home baked muffins and desserts. We also featured a side selection of foods free of wheat, dairy, fat, sodium, vinegar and concentrated sweeteners.
The Heritage Holistic Center, located upstairs, had a separate entrance from the main store, allowing it to offer services and events after the main store closed. The Center offered Astrology, Biorhythm Analysis, Naturopathic Consultations, Massage, Numerology, Past Life Therapy, Palmistry, Psychic Readings, a national Psychic Phone-line service, Reflexology, Tai Chi, Tarot, Yoga and other alternative modalities. Events, such as Psychic Fairs, Art Exhibitions, Concerts and Classes were advertised in a monthly newsletter.
On December 16th, 2010, we moved to our present location and reopened with our new name Heritage Natural Market.
